Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona is a leading academic publishing house, specialising in books and collections on research and popular science, as well as teaching and learning texts and reference and institutional works. Edicions maintains a catalogue of more than 3,000 volumes, regularly and actively launching new titles. Structured around the various collections and corresponding scientific advisory boards, this catalogue meets the goal of mobilizing the knowledge generated by researchers and academics, in accordance with the principles of editorial quality in both the selection and publication of works, and this is borne out by the numerous quality seals and publishing prizes that Edicions has been awarded.
The publisher’s Editorial Board is formed by Meritxell Anton (Director of Publicacions i Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona), Mercè Bernardo (Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitat de Barcelona), Aina Gimeno (technical editor at Publicacions i Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona), Oriol Magrinyà (Director of Editorial Barcino), Marta Marfany (Associate Professor at the Department of Translation and Language Sciences, Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Ida Mauro (Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geography and History, Universitat de Barcelona), Josep Monserrat (Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, Universitat de Barcelona), Joan Santanach (Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philology and Communication, Universitat de Barcelona), and Mireia Sopena (Head of Publishing and Production at Publicacions i Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona).
Research collections
Proposals for publication should be submitted by email to Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona (infopublicacions@ub.edu) and, where appropriate, to the director of the relevant collection. Original papers must be unpublished, reflect new developments in the specialised field of study, and adhere to the University of Barcelona’s Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. Papers should be written in clear and precise language, respecting the established rules for the presentation of originals and style guide, and also be accompanied by a brief description of the work, curriculum vitae of the author(s), and a completed questionnaire on the work. Once the required documentation is received, the suitability, originality and relevance of the paper will be assessed and, where appropriate, the external evaluation process will begin.
Citation format
In the citation of bibliographic references, the Harvard system will be followed:
Villalonga, Anna Maria. 2023. És aquí que fan comèdia? El teatre breu català a les darreries de l’edat moderna. Barcelona: Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona.
Selection of originals
Original manuscripts submitted to Edicions are evaluated by internal and external experts at the University of Barcelona, by double-blind peer review to ensure the anonymity of authors and reviewers. Once an evaluation has been made, the author(s) will receive a reasoned response from the director of the collection, whether or not the work has been accepted. Positive evaluations will indicate, where applicable, possibilities for rewriting or rethinking the paper to incorporate any amendments or observations, and, if necessary, the need to adapt the original to the editorial criteria of the collection, specifying whether changes would be obligatory or optional. Final acceptance of a manuscript may be conditional on whether or not any proposed changes are accepted. The publisher would then schedule publication in agreement with the director of the collection, and contact the author(s) of the accepted work to formalise a publishing contract, informing them of the details of the publishing process and the expected date of publication of the work.
The publication process
Once an original manuscript has been accepted and this decision has been communicated to the author(s), the publisher will begin the editing and production process, which is carried out by a desk editor in coordination with those in charge of the collection and the author(s). The editor will inform the author(s) of the different phases of the publication process, and corresponding deadlines, to facilitate the planning of any required revisions.
Copyright notices
Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona works with copyright licenses and, where appropriate, Creative Commons licenses. Each case is assessed with the director of the collection and, prior to the formalisation of a publishing contract, the author(s) will be advised on the most appropriate licence. Self-archiving of pre-print copies is permitted, with prior notice to the director of the collection and the publisher. For illustrated works, reproduction permissions are managed for all formats and media (paper and eBook).
Declaration of confidentiality
The names of persons and related information, such as email addresses, as well as the works submitted for evaluation, will serve exclusively the stated purpose of the collection and will not be made public or made available to third parties under any circumstances.
Publishing services
Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona provides services to fulfil orders for publishing from the different bodies of the University of Barcelona, and to do so according to the criteria of editorial quality and sustainability.
Institutional orders must meet the following requirements:
- They must be made by an institutional body or figure.
- For book publications, works must have an institutional endorsement that justifies and assumes responsibility for the content, and a completed questionnaire on the work is required, detailing relevant aspects related to the production and distribution of the work, which must also comply with the rules for the presentation of originals and any other requirements and processes of the collections, as outlined above.
- Once a budget for publication has been drawn up and accepted, the cost will be borne by the body that has placed the order or by those entities providing financial support for the publication of the work.
- For the publication of books, it should be noted that four copies of the planned print run will be supplied to the entity that manages the legal deposit, and Edicions UB will keep a minimum of 30 copies to meet requests and orders that may result from the attribution of the ISBN commercial code. Given the characteristics of the work and the possibilities for distribution and commercial sale, distribution agreements may be made in which more specific aspects related to sales and marketing are considered.
Publication of teaching and learning texts
Teaching and learning texts are all those works intended for use in the instruction of subjects taught at the UB and which aim to facilitate student learning. They may consist of mainly theoretical content (such as textbooks, course outlines or in-depth material) or more practical content (workbooks, practical exercises, etc.), and must meet the teaching needs and the educational objectives of the subject in question.
A teaching and learning text must include a description of the working methodology and the learning objectives established for its specific educational purpose, and it is important that the teacher contacts Edicions UB to define the characteristics of the work (the questionnaire on the work must be completed beforehand and an endorsement from the centre or department must be provided).
The publisher will be responsible for:
- editorial support
- publishing deadlines
- terms of the publishing contract
- print run estimation
- proofreading
- layout
- tracking the phases of production
Other publishing activities
- Editorial advice for UB researchers and centres.
- Marketing and sales of the Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona catalogue.
- Direct supply to UB internal sales outlets and orders received through the online bookshop (website).
- Storage and distribution of enrolment folders and institutional publications.
